Chiropractic Care

Patients often experience feelings of relief, greater mobility and a general sense of well-being after a treatment from their Doctor of Chiropractic. The chiropractic adjustment is thought to restore the body’s powerful ability to heal itself, so it is not surprising that many patients sleep better and have more energy following their treatments.

Our office offers a variety of gentle and efficient techniques: Activator, Thompson, Palmer trained doctors, Webster Pregnancy Technique, torque release technique, and spinal decompression traction.

Chiropractors can play a major role in preventative care, protecting against future pain and health problems. A wealth of independent studies support the effectiveness of chiropractic care. And most importantly, patients express a high degree of satisfaction with the benefits. The number of people including chiropractic as part of their total health care program is increasing steadily.

Laser Body Healing

Low intensity laser therapy (LILT) reduces inflammation and pain while promoting tissue re-growth. Laser is a type of light energy that promotes tissue healing at a cellular level. Typically an average of 10-12 treatments are required, with an 87% effective rate. Our clinic utilizes the Bioflex laser system developed by Dr. Fred Kahn, M.D., FRSC. The Bioflex laser system has been featured many times on Balance TV, CTV News, and Eyewitness News. Sports teams including the Toronto Raptors, the Maple Leafs, NFL football teams and athletic therapist, Chuck Mooney C.A.T. (C), NASM-PES trust and use the Bioflex laser system, now you can too.

About Low Intensity Laser Therapy

Physiological Effects of Low Intensity Laser Therapy

What is Laser Therapy?
Laser therapy is the use of monochromatic light emission from a low intensity laser diode (250 milliwatts or less) or an array of high intensity Super Luminous Diodes (providing total optical power in the 1000-2000 milliwatt range) to treat musculoskeletal injuries, chronic and degenerative conditions and to heal wounds. The light source is placed in contact with the skin allowing the photon energy to penetrate tissue, where it interacts with various intracellular biomolecules resulting in the restoration of normal cell function and enhancement of the body’s healing processes.

Short Term Effects

Production and release of beta-endorphins (these are morphine like substances produced by various cells in the body that inhibit the sensation of pain).

Cortisol production is increased (cortisol is the precursor of cortisone). This enables the body to combat the stress associated with trauma or the disease process.

The short-term effect is significant in 5 -10% of cases during or after the conclusion of the initial treatment, but is not as important as the long term or cumulative effect.

Long Term or Cumulative Effect

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production is increased resulting in improved cellular metabolism

DNA (desoxyribosenucleicacid) production, the protein building block of tissue is substantially increased.

Neurotransmission is facilitated due to elevated levels of serotonin and aceytylecholine.

Mitochondrial activity is stimulated resulting in cell replication, etc.

Modulation of macrophages, fibroblasts and other cells.

Angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)

Regulates cell membrane potential, essential in Na, CL and K ion transfer (electrolyte balance) Cytokines and other chemicals enhancing cellular communications are released.

Other Effects

The immune response is stimulated.

Lymphatic drainage is improved.

The histamine response is positively altered

Production of growth hormone is increased

Stimulation of the healing processes is accompanied by relief of symptoms

It should be noted that many other positive physiological activities are modulated and extensive research is currently in progress to fully explore these changes.

Absorption as a result of photon bombardment of various bio-molecules in the cell results in the transformation of light into biochemical energy. This is a cumulative effect and requires sufficient stimulation in order to initiate response. Typically 5 – 20 treatments varying from 30 – 60 minutes in duration are required. The end result of low intensity laser irradiation is the restoration of normal function of the cell unit. Conversely, worldwide research to date has failed to record any negative effects from this process. It should be noted that normally functioning cells are not adversely affected by the irradiation. In contrast to other therapies, Low Intensity Laser Therapy is curative rather than simply modulating symptomatology. Continued research in the Meditech and other laboratories should further enhance the effectiveness of this existing technology. After treatment the patient may have an exacerbation of pain for a varying period of time. If this occurs, utilize pain medication, and/or ice and let the therapist know prior to the next treatment.

1. Optical Treatment Heads

BioFlex incorporates flexible treatment heads with multi-source diode arrays that can be molded to the contours of the target tissue. This patented design feature ensures the effective delivery of optimum levels of irradiation and dosage.

BioFlex has penetrating laser diode treatment heads which address superficial as well as deeper pathologies, delivering healing energy where it is needed.

The Treatment heads we use at the Red Deer Chiropractic and Laser Centre are:

3. BioFlex Practitioner Software

The PC-based operating and control software allows Dr. Teresa Demas and staff to use the recommended experience-based treatment protocols for virtually every conceivable condition BioFlex has been designed to treat.

Additionally, the software includes illustrated anatomical tutorials for the benefit of the patient, showing both normal and abnormal conditions. Most importantly, therapeutic programming can be customized for every patient.

2. Main Controller Unit (MCU)

The BioFlex Main Control Unit provides the user with unprecedented control and accuracy of treatment. Its advanced technological capability offers unlimited adjustment of key treatment parameters including pulse modulation, energy density, power, frequency, wave-form, duty-cycle and duration. The Main Control Unit monitors the power output of the system, guaranteeing the accurate and consistent delivery of photon energy to the treatment site.

4.Training Program

Red Deer Chiropractic and Laser Centre is committed to the highest level of user training in order to ensure the quality and efficacy of patient treatment. Our staff has attended a structured, comprehensive, training program given by experienced medical professionals of the Meditech Inc., Toronto training centre. Dr. Fred Kahn, M.D. Tina Karu, laser researcher Leslie Perrin, and Dr. Kim Slava, MD, were just a few of the instructors.
